Tired of working in HR, Moon started over thanks to Sabio
Before going to Sabio, Moon found herself stuck in a dead-end job, “I was actually working in HR and I’d been in that field for a few years. Although, it took me hardly any time to realize that I didn’t like HR and that I wanted to switch careers. I started looking around for a different path, but wasn’t really sure where to go. Funny enough, my supervisor actually recommended that I look into coding because of how detail-oriented I was. However, I was always really weary of that area. I had friends who were computer science majors and I thought they were geniuses, it never even occurred to me that this was something I could do too. I had taken one short course on HTML/CSS in college and didn’t even finish it. So I had zero coding experience.”
Her supervisor didn’t stop there, “Her son had actually gone through Sabio and was doing really well. So, it was my supervisor’s son who referred me to Sabio and I immediately thought it was super cool. Firstly, it was local for me so that was a huge bonus. Secondly, the pandemic hit around the same time, so I had the opportunity to work from home for a little bit. At the time, Sabio was offering a part-time program that I could do while also keeping my full-time job. That made the decision to join very easy.”
At Sabio, Moon loved the cohort environment, “We had a smaller cohort since we were part-time but we all got along great and became really close friends. Another cool aspect was we had a chance to work with another cohort that was full-time on the same project.
It was a great opportunity for me personally because I was able to work both the back-end and front-end and see that whole cycle. Even though at the time I had no idea what the full picture of it was, that was tremendously helpful. I also spent time after bootcamp just reviewing my code as well. I really wanted to understand why certain things were done in a certain way. Being able to absorb the code that I created during that time really helped me when it came to my interviews because they’re primarily looking at if you know what you did in your past experience.”

When it came to the job hunt, Moon had a slightly non-traditional path, “I had a timeline and I also knew that I wouldn’t be able to quit my current job for a while. Because of that, I wasn’t able to put out as many resumes as I wanted, but I got extremely lucky. I was planning on quitting my job and dedicating all my time to looking for jobs, but it turned out I didn’t need to. Liliana Monge (Sabio’s Co-Founder & CEO,) posted about my current job on the slack channel and I sent over my resume. I had interviewed for 5 or 6 companies, but Neudesic turned out to be the winner thanks to Sabio. At my technical interview with Neudesic, that code understanding really helped me excel.”
At her new position, Moon finds going to a bootcamp helped her more than an MBA, “You’re really prepared for anything when you come out of Sabio. Sometimes they’ll ask me if I’ve used a method and I can say, no I haven’t but I learned how to use that method in these situations. We work with such a wide range of companies as a consulting firm, so it’s great because you’re able to get your feet wet in different types of technologies and they’re willing to provide training for elements you don’t know which is awesome. The work environment is so similar to Sabio so I feel right at home. We work as a team, there’s a project lead, you have each other to check code, it’s great.”
Even though she’s just starting out, Moon still credits her success to Sabio, “The great thing about Sabio is the network. It will help you out. I had a friend who had gone through another bootcamp and he is continually impressed with all the connections I’ve been able to make and all the help I’ve been able to get from Sabio. I actually ended up helping him with his resume. You'll learn so many valuable things from Sabio that you can take with you anywhere you go.”
